We had another brand can opener that seemed to be smushing things rather than cutting cans open. I expect it was just old and dull. This one cuts through the cans without leaving the tag end attached, at least now while it's new and sharp. It is slightly more difficult to turn the lever than the other brand, but not so much we can't get it done. We use a can opener every day for our cat's wet food and less frequently for canned human foods. We'll see how this one does over the long haul. When I held the old opener up to the new one to see if there was any noticeable design difference, it appeared to me that the cutting wheel and other bits were all identical in size and overall design, only the lever and the handles were different. So I am chalking up performance differences to the age and condition of the cutting blade.
